Lucky’s First Love Episode 4 Recap / Alt Title: The World Owes Me a First Love / 世界欠我一个初恋
Welcome to my recap for the fourth episode of Lucky’s First Love. In this episode, we get a lot of humor around purposeful and minor misunderstandings. Chu Nan finally gets to meet Lucky’s boss and, predictably, a lot of moping follows.
TL;DR:
Lucky is on the conference call with Xia when Chu Nan is at her house. He tries to imply that Chu Nan does not care about her, since he showed no jealousy over her spending the night at Xia’s house. Later, Chu Nan picks up Lucky and catches Shen Qing with her new, prospective husband. He chases after them in the car, nearly causing an accident and breaking the bangle on Lucky’s wrist. He issues a half-baked proposal, which Lucky rejects.
Lucky takes photos with her cousin and they accidentally send the photos to Xia with the caption, hurry and marry me. Xia reassures the investors he has full confidence in Lucky as the project head. He runs into her later and reveals that her cousin sent the photo to him and she lets Chu Nan’s proposal slip. She buys him a new suit and reveals she has invited Chu Nan to the team building event.
Xia forces all employees to take a coach bus to the hotel, while their significant others have to drive. They run into Shen Qing at the hotel and at first, she pretends to be Xia’s girlfriend, but Xia reveals that she is his sister. In the Lobby, the love quadrangle runs into each other and Chu Nan realizes Xia is Lucky’s boss.
During a drinking game, a lot of misunderstanding takes place, and Lucky excuses herself. Her friends grab her to prepare her for her magical night with Chu Nan. They are walking her back to her room when they run into Xia and a drunk Shen Qing.
Full Recap:
Xia is listening carefully as Lucky tells Chu Nan she spent the night at his house. But Chu Nan is not fazed and does not express jealousy over this. Instead, he tells Lucky that she would not have started dating him in the first place if she and her boss were together. She thanks Chu Nan for trusting her. Of course, we know that is not the only reason for his lack of jealousy.
Lucky picks up her phone and jumps when she sees Xia is still on the call. He tells her that they still need to finish the work and he was not bored because he was eating while listening to their stupid conversation. She calls him out on eavesdropping, but he scoffs and points out the WeChat group gossip incident.
He mocks her regarding her boyfriend’s lack of jealousy. She fires back that if he had a mature love then Shen Qing would have more trust in him. Lucky says she has no obligation to explain herself and tells him she will email the rest of the work when she is finished. She cuts off the call, leaving him to issue an empty threat to no one.
Chu Nan picks up Lucky from her office and tells her she should have rested at home longer. She responds that she is glad to be back at work. She praises Xia, saying that even though he is short-tempered he strives for perfection.
Lucky catches Chu Nan staring at a cake shop and asks if he would like some cake. He responds no, but continues to stare. As he is staring, Shen Qing comes out and walks toward a man. In his head, he remembers Xiao Xi’s words that she might be moving with Nina’s dad. He watches them take off and proceeds to follow them, driving quite aggressively.
Lucky is confused and asks what is going on. She gets no response. When Chu Nan slams on his brakes, Lucky’s wrist slams against the dashboard, and the jade bangle breaks. She apologizes. While Chu Nan says, Let’s get married, in an aggressive tone. Amazing smile aside, this guy is driving me crazy.
They arrive back at Lucky’s home and the atmosphere is awkward. Chu Nan breaks that silence first, commenting that she must be scared. Lucky dodges the question, telling him she will pay his mom back for the bangle. He asks if she is rejecting his proposal. I do not think that can be called a proposal… Lucky starts by saying no, then yes, then no again. She tells him that she has not considered getting married and returns to the topic of paying for the bracelet.
Chu Nan tells her not to worry about the bracelet and explains he has been under a lot of stress recently. He says to forget about the proposal and watches her go into the house. He drops his head and proclaims that he has no idea what he is doing.
Lucky is with her cousin at a bridal salon and her cousin is elated that Chu Nan already proposed. When Lucky explains that she said no, her cousin starts lecturing her about how life is too short to be celibate. Ha! Why is everyone in this drama so enthusiastic for Lucky to lose her V-card?
Xia is meeting with investors regarding Lucky’s Infinite Love instance. The investors are complaining that the person in charge has no experience and does not have the elite resume needed to be successful. They offer up help finding a suitable candidate. Xia says he trusts her and that TIG looks for capacity and enthusiasm.
Back at the bridal salon, her cousin says that Lucky is going to steal her thunder. She takes a picture of Lucky to send to Chu Nan. Lucky tries to stop her, but the attendant helps keep the phone away from her. But the bride messes up and sends the picture to Xia with the words, hurry up, come marry me.
Xia is stunned for a moment and the investors wait for him to regain his composure. He readdresses the issue with the investors saying that his game is making them the most profit. Xia then excuses himself saying that in order to keep making them money, he is going to go back and supervise the project manager.
Yiyi calls Lucky to hurry her back, saying that Xia and Amy are returning soon. Lucky is at a convenience store eating instant noodles and complains about why they are returning so soon when Xia walks into the store. She states he must have offended the investors again and Xia, who is standing behind her, says you know me so well. Naturally, she chokes on her noodles and apologizes.
Xia asks where she was in the morning. She responds I was looking for inspiration. He tells her to sit down and ask Lucky what the most taboo topic in a relationship is. She says, of course, it is breaking up. He corrects her, it is marriage. She asks, why? marriage is a happy ending. He says, it is game over. Xia pulls out his phone and shows her the wedding dress photo. He point out she was skipping work for wedding photos. She corrects him that it was for her cousin and her cousin sent it to him because he was number 1 on her contact list. Naturally, he is quite mollified by this discovery.
She apologizes again. Xia asks if she is so eager to get married and she responds, no, I told him no. Xia is taken aback and asks if Chu Nan proposed. Lucky just spits out her noodles all over Xia’s suit.
We jump to Xia and Lucky in a clothing store. The attendant tells her that her card has been declined. Lucky tells Xia that he looks good in anything, but he insists on getting the expensive suit. Lucky pulls out another card and grumbles about the suit costing her two months of salary. Xia asks her if she realizes how much she will get paid as the dungeon lead. Her eyes brighten as she starts running the calculations.
They walk by a swimsuit vendor and Lucky says she should were a two-piece during the team building so she is not embarrassed in front of Chu Nan. Xia asks if Chu Nan will be joining them. He comments that she rejected his proposal, but now she is inviting him to the work event. She responds that she needs to foster their relationship. Xia is angry and says he is not paying her to shop.
At home, Mom is teaching Lucky how to make sushi rolls. Mom says they will bond over food and it will help to ease the tension of the ride to the hotel. Lucky packs her bag and in goes her one-piece.
The next morning, Lucky meets Chu Nan by his car and apologizes that he will have to drive there on his own as all employees must go by coach bus. The bus pulls up, and Amy calls Lucky over. Lucky climbs up, and the last spot available is across for Yiyi and Amy, right next to Xia. The bus moves and Lucky falls over into the seat and Xia catches her. He looks so natural holding her.
Lucky has a dream that she and Chu Nan are poolside, walking toward each other when Xia comes out of nowhere and ask her about the project. He pushes her into the pool and Lucky wakes up from her dream. She is sleeping on Xia’s shoulder and quickly wipes her drool off his jacket proclaiming she cannot afford to buy him a jacket.
Lucky looks in her bag for the sushi and sees her container spread out in front of Xia. She watches as he puts the last bite into his mouth and asks if he realizes it is hers. He comments that it explains the awful tastes and Lucky just apologizes. Aww, poor Lucky, he is such a little bully to her.
Shen Qing is at the resort, discussing anniversary cake plans with prospective clients. The client is demanding imported strawberries, but Shen Qing says she cannot guarantee quality control with off-season, imported strawberries. She will not risk her company’s reputation. The wife leaves and the husband begins to flirt with Shen Qing, grabbing her hand. Shen Qing offers a taste of her cake, then smears it on his face.
Chu Nan informs Lucky that he is held up in traffic and will be arriving later. Lucky spots Shen Qing and the two greet each other. Shen Qing asks about her ankle and Lucky informs her that they are on a team-building retreat. Shen Qing says then Xia must also be at the resort.
She hears the employees gossiping about her being Xia’s girlfriend. So naturally, when Xia comes into the lobby, she decides to tease him and play the part. She grabs onto his arm and he tries to shake her off, but she just grabs his arm again. They decide to take everyone on an eco-tour while they wait for the rooms to be ready. At first, Lucky says she will wait for Chu Nan, but threatened with her year-end bonus, she goes along.
As they are walking on the tour, Xia asks Shen Qing when she plans to drop the act, and she just calls him boring. She says loudly how he never comes to visit her and her son anymore. Dong dong tells Amy to be careful she does not get misunderstood. Amy says she is not worried, but Lucky should be careful. Shen Qing just ends up looking sideways at Xia over the exchange.
The eco-tour is a scenic green space with waterfalls. Shen Qing offers to take a picture of Lucky, Amy, and Yi. She asks why Lucky is considered the mascot. The co-workers say it is because they will never fail so long as she is with the company. Lucky brushes it all off as a coincidence.
They give the example of how they had been trying to meet with an individual, Mr. Jin, for a week to no avail. Driving Xia home, Lucky, coincidentally rear-ends Mr. Jin and all worked out. We also get to see how the graffiti came about, it was Lucky’s idea to paint it so they could get the copyright for the characters. Shen Qing declares that Lucky and Xia have a tacit understanding of each other and it is no wonder that he cannot do without her.
Lucky feels awkward about the whole exchange and looks to Xia for help clarifying her relationship with him. Xia simply looks at the waterfall and takes pictures. Lucky goes to excuse herself, when Xia says to Shen Qing, Sis, when are you headed back. Everyone repeats sister and asks why they have different surnames. Shen Qing explains that their parents passed away early and she took her mom’s surname in honor of her memory. Lucky proclaims that she will stay after all.
Chu Nan is waiting at the hotel; Lucky introduces him to Yiyi and Amy. They both giggle at the name, he just smiles and says he is used to it. Xia and Shen Qing walk into the lobby and Chu Nan is stunned silent. Lucky realizes they know each other, but before Chu Nan can say how, an attendant comes over with their room cards. Chu Nan upgraded them to a suite and Shen Qing announces that she is going to stay and play as well.
At dinner, Lucky tries to grab some food for Chu Nan, but Xia keeps snagging each piece out of her chopsticks. Lucky retaliates by making a Peking duck wrap just the way Xia likes it and snatching it away to give to Chu Nan. Chu Nan keeps drinking and Shen Qing just watches the exchange silently.
After dinner, they play never have I ever around a drinking table. Yiyi proclaims never has she ever met anyone she wanted to marry at first sight. Chu Nan drinks and naturally, everyone misunderstands. Amy says she has never been rescued by a hot guy. Lucky drinks because Xia rescued her, but again everyone misunderstands. They all tell Chu Nan he should be drinking as well, but she tells them it was not Chu Nan. Xia, who has opted out of playing, just smirks, but casually drinks and proclaims he is thirsty.
Dong Dong says, never have I ever slept in a man’s bed, he tells Lucky that she has to drink since she is in a relationship. Chu Nan quickly responds they have not done anything. She looks awkward with her glass half raised, having slept in Xia’s bed. Dong dong keeps pushing her to say who it was, but Xia commands him to go order some food. Lucky smiles at Xia, relieved.
Lucky excuses herself, Amy and Yiyi grab her arms and tell Chu Nan that they are taking his girlfriend for the night. He says he doesn’t mind at all. They bring Lucky into a room and proceed to prepare her for her night with Chu Nan. She is all made up and dressed in a white nightgown. They walk her down the hall to her room and Xia comes out of the elevator helping a drunk Shen Qing. His eyes pop out when he sees Lucky and she jumps in fright.
Impression:
I almost feel bad for Chu Nan because he obviously has no direction in life without Shen Qing. However, the way he treats Lucky is driving me to dislike him more each time he shows up. I hope that he can redeem himself in the end, but it will take me a lot to like his character at this point.
It might be a bit silly, but I love this running gag where everyone is always talking behind their boss’s back and he will be standing right behind them. He always responds with an unaffected answer and they always jump in surprise. The actors do a great job with the comedic timing and it makes me laugh every single time.
I like that most of the misunderstanding takes place by those not involved. Our core members might be lacking information, but it is not the heavy-handed misunderstanding that causes drama. Rather it is mostly being used for comic effect. Lucky is not attached to Chu Nan and although Xia clearly has an interest in Lucky, even if he does not realize it, most of his concern is around his sister.
Again, Chu Nan and Shen Qing are clearly still in love and need to just stop torturing everyone else, but I cannot feel too bad for their sadness, since it is largely of their own making. I get that his parents do not like her and there seems to be something where Xia got involved in their relationship, but if you cannot move on you should not be getting in new relationships.
